CCP 103 – ASSIGNMENTS and GRADES
SPRING 2001

Assignments

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER (ECC) VISITS: You are required to visit three (3) ECC centers. Visit a Head Start program, an accredited program and a program of your choice. The visit must last at least one (1) hour and take place while children are present and awake. You may not use a center that you are currently working at as one of the sites. A list of centers will be provided.

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS:

May 9 - Read handout on the History of Early Childhood Education.
May 14 - Read material on developmentally appropriate practice.
Write a one page paper discussing your own experiences with teachers. Discuss the characteristics you might like to imitate and which you would like to avoid as an early childhood educator. Include the qualities you feel are essential to an early childhood professional.
May 16 - Read material on Piaget programs
May 21 - Read materials on High Scope programs
May 23 - Write a one to two page paper discussing at least five differences between open and traditional education
May 30 - Read materials on kindergarten education.
June 4 - Create your own classroom arrangement based on the readings. You can choose the age group and number of children in your class. Include a description of classroom and why you chose that arrangement.
June 6 - Read material on parent involvement. Write a short paper on how you will involve parents in your center.
June 11 - Read materials on Montessori programs
June 13 - Read materials on Infant Toddler programs
June 18 - Read materials on Reggio Emilia programs
June 20 -.Read material on Head Start programs. List 5 facts about head start
June 25 - Written philosophy of education is due
Read materials on current trends in early childhood education.
June 27 - Poster presentations are due

OBSERVATION PAPERS: You are required to write a one-to-two page paper on each ECC you visit. These papers are due no later than June 25th. No papers will be accepted after that date. The following should be included in each paper:

· Describe the type of program (e.g., Montessori, DAP, High Scope)
· Include the program schedule you observed.
· Is the program is AEYC accredited.
· The staff-to-child ratio.
· Describe the types of interactions between the staff and children and the staff and parents.
· List the number of children in the classroom.
· Discuss how discipline is handled.
· Describe and discuss, in some detail, what you observed. For instance, discuss what did you both liked and disliked about the program.


Grades

Grades will be determined in the following manner:

Classroom participation 15 points
Attendance 30 points
Differences of open and traditional education 5 points
Classroom arrangement 5 points
Philosophy of ECC education 5 points
Center visit papers 20 points
Poster and presentation 20 points

Assignments handed in late will loose five points for each class it is late.

The points total 100 and the grades will be as follows:

90 - 100 = A
80 - 90 = B
70 - 80 = C
60 - 70 = D
60 or lower = E
